Back in the mists of time, I wrote an MA thesis on the Stamp Act Crisis entitled Conflicted Ideologies of Apprehension which stressed that both sides were increasingly driven by their fears of what the other side was "actually" doing rather than what they were. Thus, the revenue measures were all designed to enable the imperial authorities to rule without colonial interference and the American resistance was about forcing the mother country to pay for their defence and rising administration costs via requisitions which were seldom met in full by the colonists.

Certainly some patriots might raise the spectre of abolition to panic slaveholders but note that slavery is not abolished in the Empire until much later (if at all!) and some Black Loyalists were eventually sold to Caribbean planters!
