Fascinating. So much of what the Chin family express as core values from their own culture resonates with what in the West became known as the Protestant work ethic with its emphasis on postponed gratification and stoical acceptance of adversity. I was trained as a historian to believe that the past should help us to understand the many ways there are to be human (hence humanities), and I worry sometimes that globalization has diminished our diversity. One of the richest forms of history is to take the seemingly ordinary person and unpack their complexity. You do it well.
