I must confess when Christine offered the word, it was little more than a word to me so I learned as well. Riesman’s book is one of a cluster in the 50s that still resonate with me. He was an early voice worrying about conformity at a time when many of his contemporaries were obsessing about deviancy; the latter worried about Communist brainwashing while blithely ignoring the arguably more successful capitalist version.
