In my case I have always assumed there's a cultural bias. I remember on a first trip to the US we were discussing what to do one evening and someone mentioned a bar that did great pizza and all the Americans responded as if it were a cure for cancer. Brits of my vintage were steered away from enthusiasm. Hence my largely British readership often treat me to Buddhist style single hand clapping.
