One of the more interesting things that happened in my field — American Studies — was the spread of the idea that America exists not just in America. All across the planet there are Americas — some are corporate tentacles and some are related, mental constructions. Occasionally, I would get my British students to ponder how America defines Britishness. Neither side came out well!
